West Ham fans cannot understand extra-time decision made by Moyes against Man United

West Ham United suffered an extra-time FA Cup defeat to Manchester United on Tuesday night at Old Trafford as substitute Scott McTominay scored – but Hammers fans cannot understand a decision made by David Moyes in the second half.

McTominay came on in the second half as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer looked to make the breakthrough in a match that had been somewhat tentative. The scorelined had remained at a deadlock until a counter attack seven minutes into extra time.

West Ham partially cleared a cross but the ball fell to Marcus Rashford, who laid off Scotland international McTominay. His prod at goal proved decisive, nestling in the bottom corner of Lukasz Fabianski’s goal to send United through.

Moyes made the decision to rest Michail Antonio despite not having a recognised back-up striker in the first team, following Sebastian Haller’s exit. Jesse Lingard was also missing as the clash came against his parent club.

Andriy Yarmolenko started up front but was ineffective and replaced after 54 minutes by Mipo Odubeko. It was the 18-year-old’s second senior appearance for the Hammers, since swapping Manchester United for West Ham.

However, Moyes then chose to take off Odubeko in the 112th minute and replace him with Manuel Lanzini – meaning Odubeko suffered the ignominy of coming on and coming off again. Hammers fans have responded to that decision on Twitter.
