West Ham defender Arthur Masuaku has taken the biggest step backwards

West Ham are currently on course for a mid-season finish during Manuel Pellegrini’s first year and is a platform to build on for next year.

The Hammers certainly have plenty of quality individuals in their squad, but there are some at the London Stadium too that aren’t quite up to the mark.

Arthur Masuaku is the one player that stands out as someone who has taken the biggest step backwards at West Ham in the 2018/19 season.

The 25-year-old had the chance to cement his spot as the first-choice left-back when Pellegrini arrived in the summer, but is now behind teammate Aaron Cresswell and it looks difficult to see a way back into the XI.

Masuaku has made 22 senior appearances across all competitions this season and struggled in the defensive phase.

The left-footed ace is a speed machine that is much better attacking and perhaps going forward his long-term future should be as a winger.

Cresswell appears to have recaptured his best form and is looking consistent in defence, while Masuaku is too vulnerable with his back to goal and has struggled to force his way into Manuel Pellegrini’s side in recent months.

There was a lot of potential shown from Masuaku when he arrived in 2016, but after his campaign it seems like he won’t quite be at the level required to progress.
