West Ham could reportedly miss out on the permanent signing of Manchester United midfielder Jesse Lingard due to the England international’s £100,000-a-week wage.

According to the Daily Mail, Lingard could start next season back with the Red Devils with the Hammers concerned that they won’t have the finances to sign the 28-year-old playmaker, with the east London side recording losses of £65million last season and a bigger financial hit likely to follow from this campaign.

Lingard has been a sensation since joining the Irons in the January transfer window, with the attacking midfielder scoring nine goals and assisting a further three in his 13 Premier League appearances for West Ham, with David Moyes’ side still fighting for a European spot in the league standings heading into the final three games of the season.

It is expected that West Ham will attempt to make an offer to United to take Lingard off their hands permanently, yet his £100,000-a-week contract is seemingly causing some problems heading into the summer transfer window, with the Hammers eager to hand the England international a four-year deal starting from this off season.

TBR View: West Ham should take the financial risk to sign Lingard

West Ham’s finances have taken a huge hit over the past 12 months as a direct response to the pandemic, with every football club around the world experiencing a similar financial fate, yet for the Hammers, trying to recruit Lingard on a permanent deal is a risk they should be willing to make.

With European football a real possibility next season for the Irons, adding Lingard to the cause will improve the overall quality of the squad in a big way and show other clubs the intent Moyes’ side have heading into the future.
