West Ham completing reported swoop would kill Tottenham's hopes of landing Skriniar
Tottenham are desperate to sign a centre-back to finally replace Jan Vertonghen and Inter Milan’s Milan Skriniar is clearly the north London club’s number one target – but West Ham United could throw their hopes of signing Skriniar into doubt.
The Telegraph state that Skriniar, 25, remains the club’s first choice after Steve Hitchen – the club’s transfer chief – was photographed in Milan after looking to secure a deal for the Slovakia international. But Inter want as much as £55million.
Skriniar would be a top, top addition to Jose Mourinho’s side. Comfortable on the ball, physical in the air and aggressive when it comes to defending, Skriniar is worth every penny – but in the current climate, he is very expensive, though understandably.
Talks are still reportedly ongoing for Skriniar, with Inter said to be looking at replacements. Italian journalist Alfredo Pedulla, among other sources, have claimed that Inter are looking at Napoli’s Nikola Maksimovic to cover the potential loss of Skriniar.
So, Inter landing Maksimovic is absolutely crucial to Tottenham signign Skriniar. Another club looking to land Maksimovic would hand Spurs a huge blow then, and it appears that Tottenham’s London rivals West Ham could do just that.
Indeed, West Ham are desperate for a central defender and Sky Italy journalist Gianluca Di Marzio has claimed that not only have West Ham made an offer for the Serbian – but that they are locked in talks to sign Maksimovic.
The Hammers are linked with other players but it appears Maksimovic is currently the ideal man to plug the gap at the back. A potential move to West Ham, then, would ruin any hopes Tottenham have of landing Skriniar before October 5.
