Mark Noble has told West Ham United’s official website that Tottenham Hotspur deserve to be sitting in third place in the Premier League, and in the semi-finals of the Champions League.
West Ham’s bitter rivals suffered a 1-0 defeat to the Hammers on Saturday afternoon. It was Spurs’ first loss at their new ground, and the first goal they have conceded since relocating from Wembley.
Previously, Spurs had won all four matches played at the new stadium, including a 1-0 win over Manchester City in the quarter finals of the Champions League. Now, they are preparing for the semi-finals against Ajax.
West Ham skipper Noble saw out 85 minutes of the win, and was asked about Mauricio Pochettino’s side. He said they deserve their place in the Premier League table, and their position in the last four of the Champions League.
His response is slightly surprising, given that West Ham and Spurs are known for their rivalry.
“Spurs are a fantastic team and they fully deserved to be where they are in the league, and they fully deserve to be in the Champions League semi-final tonight,” Noble said.
“But on Saturday, the way we played away from home and the way we took the game to them, we were brave and we went there to win the game.”
It is testament to Pochettino that Spurs are in the position they are in. Without a home ground for two seasons, they remain nailed on to finish in the top four.
Yes, a trophy eludes them and being a proper contender for the Premier League title is still some distance away. But getting to the last four of the Champions League is a remarkable achievement.
Now in their home ground and investment expected this summer, Spurs can only progress.
