As the top six teams in the Premier League jostle for positions this season, there is a fascinating battle going on just below them in the table.
There are just three points that separate teams between seventh and 12th as it stands, with a seventh-placed position potentially enough to secure European football for next season.
Watford currently hold the spot in seventh, but West Ham are part of the chasing pack that will still feel confident of a great finish this season.
The Hammers are just two points behind Watford, but like many of their direct rivals have been far too inconsistent his campaign.
There is a real opportunity for Manuel Pellegrini’s side to close in on European football if they can find some regular form in the second half of the season.
An elite addition to the squad in the January transfer window would give them a significant boost and they appear to be working on just that.

According to the Daily Mail, West Ham have had “further talks” with centre-forward Maxi Gomez from Spanish club Celta Vigo.
It is understood that they are in discussions about the £40million-rated ace and he could replace Marko Arnautovic, who is hoping for a London Stadium exit this month still.
Gomez could be the difference for the Hammers for the rest of the season if he joins and is a highly-rated talent.
The 22-year-old would be a great fit for Pellegrini’s XI and has proven himself to be quite lethal since he burst onto the scene in La Liga.
He’s already scored nine goals and supplied five assists in just 19 games for Celta this season in all competitions.
Gomez offers a major aerial threat and is a great finisher, which is why he could really help galvanise a talented group at West Ham.
