West Ham have taken to Twitter to announce that Sonny Perkins has left the London Stadium, with Tottenham and Leeds lurking.

What’s the story?

Well, the Hammers were struggling to negotiate a new contract with the 18-year-old prospect, who is wanted by both Antonio Conte and Jesse Marsch.

Aston Villa are also interested in bringing Perkins to Villa Park.

The teenager won the Young Player of the Year award at the London Stadium last season, after he scored 14 goals in 29 appearances for the youth sides.

Perkins was also given his Premier League debut by David Moyes – coincidentally against Leeds – while he also made two appearances in the Europa League.

Unfortunately for West Ham, the England Under-18 international didn’t see a future for himself in east London, and he is now on the lookout for a new club.

In some form of consolation, the Irons will at least receive compensation from the club Perkins chooses to join, due to their work developing him in the youth ranks.

Sonny Perkins risks upsetting West Ham more if he chooses Tottenham over Leeds

After reading West Ham’s statement on the matter, it’s clear they are furious about Perkins departing.

The Hammers explain how they are “extremely disappointed” with the teenager’s decision to run down his contract.

West Ham add that they are also upset with the striker’s representatives, and “strongly believe” Perkins was approached to join another side which led to him asking to be released from his scholarship.

They add that they are taking the matter very seriously.

Now, if he chooses to join West Ham’s London rivals Tottenham, it will surely sour his relationship with the east Londoners even more.

Only time will tell what happens, but on the basis of that statement, Perkins has burned a few bridges on his way out of West Ham.
