West Brom may already rue not signing Andre Ayew this summer

It was suggested by the Daily Mail in the final days of the transfer window that West Bromwich Albion were one of the Premier League sides considering a late move for Andre Ayew.

Slaven Bilic had to be shrewd in the market. As noted by The Telegraph, his budget upon sealing promotion was just £20 million.

So it is probably little surprise that little seemed to come of the links with Ayew.

They would manage to bring in a striker just before the deadline. And it is fair to say that Karlan Grant has made a promising start to life at the Hawthorns.

He opened his account with a superb finish in the draw with Brighton last month. And his strike-rate with Huddersfield hints that he is going to get plenty over the coming months.

Nevertheless, Baggies fans would be forgiven for feeling that they needed more in the window in light of their start to the campaign.

Unfortunately, the signs are currently looking ominous. West Brom currently sit in the bottom three and are still awaiting their first win of the season.

Signing Ayew may not have solved all of their remaining problems. But based on his own start to the season, it would appear that he may been capable of making a real impact.

The 30-year-old already has five goals in 10 appearances for Swansea this season. His latest goal came from a late equaliser at Brentford on Tuesday.

It may have been that West Brom did attempt to sign Ayew and found that the Swans were unwilling to do business.

As reported by BBC Sport, Swansea spent £18 million to re-sign Ayew in 2018. His value may no longer be that high. But his importance to Steve Cooper’s men remains. Therefore, he would not have come cheap either.

West Brom have plenty of time, and another window, to turn their fortunes around. But the early signs hint that they needed to do more when they had the chance in the summer. And Ayew is perhaps one player that they should rue not landing.
