West Bromwich Albion have had no contact from Aston Villa over the signing of Matt Phillips, according to the Birmingham Mail.
Dean Smith has already snapped up Jota and Trezeguet as well as making Anwar El Ghazi’s loan move permanent, so looks well stocked out wide even accounting for Albert Adomah’s release this summer.
That means that a swoop for the winger who cost WBA £6 million (Guardian) back in 2016 would not make a great deal of sense, especially given that he’s 28 now.
Phillips has done the business in the Premier League before, but Villa now have a strong variety of options out wide after their summer spending and also have Callum O’Hare busting a gut to break into the side.
The Scotland man is of the wrong age profile really for what Smith wants, although he did bring in a slightly older face in Jota, who they also nabbed from a local rival in Birmingham.
But with the Baggies looking to clamber back into the top slight at the second time of asking, they won’t want to let Phillips go on the cheap, if Villa do eventually make an approach.
