West Bromwich Albion defied the odds to steal a point at The Etihad on Tuesday evening thanks to a stunning rearguard display that saw Slaven Bilic’s side frustrate City – and West Brom fans have applauded Sam Johnstone.
It has been a difficult season for West Brom so far. Heading into the match, Bilic’s men had won just one of 12 Premier League matches – so the writing seemed to be on the wall against a City side that are slowly improving.
Certainly, City looked as though they were going to cruise to three points – especially as Ilkay Gundogan opened the scoring on the half-hour mark. Brilliant work from Raheem Sterling saw him cut back to the German to score.
But the Baggies drew level before the break. Man City failed to clear a corner and Semi Ajayi struck an effort at goal, with a deflection off Portuguese defender Ruben Dias taking the ball past Ederson and into the back of the net.
The second-half saw City pepper Johnstone’s goal, but the £32,500-a-week (Spotrac) man was in stunning form. He produced save after save, including late blocks with his feet to prevent Kevin De Bruyne and Ilkay Gundogan.
West Brom supporters took to Twitter throughout and after the match to heap praise on former Aston Villa and Manchester United goalkeeper Johnstone – as his display proved to be integral to an excellent away point.
