West Brom director discusses chances of signing Newcastle star Dwight Gayle

Dwight Gayle has been in sensational form for West Bromwich Albion but the chances of the Championship club signing him from Newcastle United permanently have been ruled out, by Baggies director Luke Dowling.

The 28-year-old has shone in a Baggies shirt, proving once again that he is one of the best Championship goalscorers about. He has scored 24 goals and laid on a further eight assists in just 41 outings.

Gayle has little future at Newcastle, even though The Toon are yet to confirm the signing of Salomon Rondon from West Brom on a permanent basis – and even manager Rafa Benitez.

Speaking to BBC Radio West Midlands, sporting and technical director Dowling stated that West Brom would not be giving out Premier League contracts while they remain in the Championship – following their loss in the play-offs.

“Dwight’s contract is a Premier League contract. We will pay Premier League contracts but only once we’re back in the Premier League,” Dowling said.

“I know it won’t be the news Albion fans want to hear, but they need to trust us and know we are doing everything right for this football club.”

TBR’s view

The perfect move for both clubs, and one that would suit all parties, is if West Brom and Newcastle agreed a swap deal for Gayle and Rondon – but this time on a permanent basis.

But the only thing stopping West Brom from landing Gayle is his contract. Spotrac claim Gayle is earning £40,000 a week, following his £10million move to Newcastle in the summer of 2016 from Crystal Palace (Mail).

West Brom may be tempted to move for Gayle if the striker is willing to accept a reduced contract. It remains to be seen if he will do it.
