Newly-promoted Aston Villa secured their first win and points of the Premier League season with a 2-0 triumph over Everton on Friday night. The fact that Dean Smith’s side earned the victory in front of a rampant Villa Park will have made the occasion all the more significant.
The Villans will now be looking to kick on from this result and sustain their form and positive momentum. One player who will surely have been given a huge boost is striker Wesley Moraes. The Midlands club parted with £22 million to land the forward this summer. Smith will need his new No. 9 to flourish in English football if his side are to stand a chance of top flight survival this season.
He will have been delighted to see the Brazilian open his account for Villa against Everton then. Wesley enjoyed a fine game all round against the Toffees and impressed hugely. After the match, he told the club’s official website, “I am very happy to help my team with the goal…The goal, of course, gives me more confidence. Now I have to continue like this”.
Villa fans will have been relieved to see Wesley get off the mark. The quicker that first goal comes for a striker at a new club the better. He will feel much more settled now and ready to get on with the rest of the campaign with that first hurdle behind him.
The fact that Wesley is clearly feeling so confident is a massive bonus for Smith. His side will face plenty of stern tests in the coming weeks, but having a striker full of belief in his team will help hugely.
