Werner would offer Liverpool attacking alternative they lacked in Everton stalement

Liverpool are still in with a chance of signing RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner during the summer transfer window, according to the Liverpool Echo.

They report that there has been no deal agreed between the Germany international and Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich, leaving the door open for Liverpool to do a deal.

Leipzig manager Ralf Rangnick has insisted the player has not finalised his departure. He said: “A possible agreement is impossible for 2019 [right now]. We would have to agree, and we are not.

“Nobody has approached us from Bayern. There will not be a case like Leon Goretzka and Robert Lewandowski between us and Timo Werner.  This option does not exist and we do not need to talk about this scenario. Clubs that want him will report in the summer and then we will find a fair, mutually agreed solution.”

And while Liverpool’s front three is frightening at times, Jurgen Klopp does not have the attacking depth that Pep Guardiola has been able to call on in the title race.

Manchester City’s alternatives are the likes of Gabriel Jesus, Bernardo Silva and former PFA Player of the Year Riyad Mahrez and signing Werner would give Liverpool backups in a similar class.

And the fact that Bayern haven’t sewn the deal up is a boost for Klopp if he does want to take his squad into the class of City’s.
