It’s been obvious for much of the 2018/19 that Everton need a high-quality striker if they are to elevate themselves from their current mid-table mediocrity into a genuine challenger to the top six.
With their recent outlay, and the appointment of Marco Silva, that has to be the goal for the Toffees. But Sam Allardyce left Silva with the expensive burden of Cenk Tosun and the Turkish international is not suited to the style of football Everton now want to play.
While a lack of firepower is not Everton’s only problem – the heart of their defence looks shaky and the midfield balance needs work – it is the area that looks most likely to require heavy investment to rectify.
That’s where German international Timo Werner comes in. He has less than 18 months left on his current contract with RB Leipzig, who the Independent reported in January would sell him if he didn’t agree an extension.

Bild reported in January that Werner could have been sold in January for £36m (40m euros) and that valuation is only going to go down the longer that the German’s situation remains unsolved.
Liverpool were linked with a swoop in that report, but would he move to Anfield if he wouldn’t be first-choice? Everton would put him front and centre, playing him every week in a team that wants to play high-tempo football just like Leipzig.
Werner is one of the hottest young strikers in world football right now; already Germany’s first-choice and looks tailor-made for the Premier League.
If Everton can beat Liverpool to Werner’s signature, they would have a striker capable of firing them into a new era – making him the man who should be Silva’s dream summer signing.
