Leeds United’s players were in unanimous rapture as they got their hands on the Championship title last night.
The players celebrated their deserved promotion and title win in some style following a 4-0 win over Charlton Athletic at Elland Road.
But one player was fairly mooted in his own celebrations.
When Real Madrid won the La Liga title earlier this month much was made of Gareth Bale’s awkward behaviour and Kiko Casilla appeared to be doing his best impression of his former Bernabeu team-mate.
Casilla barely got involved in the celebrations, cutting an isolated figure as much of the squad celebrated with reckless abandon.
It came after Casilla missed the game altogether, despite recently coming back from suspension to feature against Derby County, with Kamil Miazek backing up Illan Meslier from the bench.
It could be that Miazek was simply involved to give him a medal, but Casilla’s absence and subsequent celebrations must bring doubts over his future. Another theory is that Casilla missed the game as it was against Charlton, the team against whom Casilla was accused and eventually charged with racially abusing former Addicks loanee Jonathan Leko.
The Daily Mail reported in April that Casilla earns around £30,000-a-week at Leeds and the club could be using those wages for far more important players.
Meslier looks an able replacement, in fact, some Leeds fans would argue he is a superior player.
Getting Casilla off the books could be a big help to Leeds’ plans in the summer transfer window and yesterday seemed a big hint over his future.
Time will tell, but it seems very believable that Leeds might be open to letting the controversial Spaniard go this summer.
