Arsene Wenger has just been proven absolutely right about player Arsenal sold in 2016
Another day and another shock in the 2022 World Cup with ex-Arsenal gem Takuma Asano in the news after Japan defeated Germany.
Ilkay Gundogan scored a penalty to put the 2014 winners in the lead but a spirited second-half display saw them defeated.
Ritsu Doan equalised on 75 minutes before Asano scored a wonderful goal to send the Japanese into pandemonium.
The win is seriously detrimental to Germany who now face Spain in a must-win game next in the group.
Asano will see his name in lights for years to come in his home country and Arsenal fans might be wondering what might have been.
He signed for the Gunners in 2016 and some comments from Arsene Wenger now look to have made a lot of sense.
When he was added to the Gunners’ ranks he spoke to the club’s official website and he had some praise for the forward.
He said at the time: “Takuma is a talented young striker and very much one for the future.
“He has had an impressive start to his career in Japan and we look forward to him developing over the next couple of years.”
These quotes will likely surface a lot in the coming days. Wenger was always a master at picking up a young player and he was on the money regarding Asano.
Asano scores World Cup goal as Japan defeat Germany
The 28-year-old perhaps hasn’t kicked on as much as Wenger thought he would but the talent has always been there.
His goal against Germany was superb. A deft touch from a long ball set him on his way to goal and his finish was quality.
Asano has scored just once for Bochum during 2022/23 and his place at the World Cup was in question.
He had picked up a knee problem and it wasn’t clear until the last moment whether or not he would make the squad.
Asano proved an inspired substitution by boss Hajime Moriyasu and a start could be on the horizon against Costa Rica.
The forward never got to pull on the Arsenal jersey for the first team.
It’s fair to say, however, that after today, Wenger got things absolutely bang on with his assessment of the Japan star in 2016.
