‘We’d be talking about a lot more’: Shearer says no-one’s talking about how good Spurs star has been this year

Alan Shearer feels the performances of Harry Kane are going under the radar this season because of Erling Haaland.

The Tottenham talisman ended his Champions League goal drought in last night’s 3-2 win over Eintracht Frankfurt to put Spurs top of the ground.

Writing for the Athletic, Premier League legend Shearer says that Kane would match Haaland’s numbers for City if he was in Pep Guardiola’s team.

City of course tried to sign Kane last summer before going for Haaland this time around, and he has taken to life in the Premier League impressively.

Shearer on Kane

Shearer said: “If Harry was in this City team, he would be scoring as many goals as Erling has. A top goalscorer in this City team should score 40 goals. Harry’s record tells you that he would do that. There’s no doubt what Pep thinks about Harry and what the vast majority of other people think about him as well. He is a top goalscorer.

“He’s got eight in nine league games so far, which we’d be talking about a lot more if it wasn’t for Erling. That’s in a team where he also has to do a lot of the creative work. At Spurs, Harry will go deeper, which he quite enjoys doing, to link up with Son. Erling doesn’t. At Tottenham that creativity — certainly from the midfield — is not always there.

“If you put Harry in that City team, they would encourage him to stay up top more rather than coming deep to get involved in the game. I don’t think they would have taken that away from him totally, but they would want him to be more of a focal point.

“I would be confident of scoring quite a few goals myself in this City team. A good forward should get 30 goals. A top-class one — which they’ve got now — would get 40 plus. I would be confident of getting that. And I’m confident that Harry would get that, too.”

Kane has had a habit of starting seasons slowly but that is not the case this season and he is now off the mark in this year’s Champions League too.

Haaland is grabbing the headlines but that might suit Kane quite nicely, to keep grabbing his goals and lurking in the chase for the Golden Boot.

It is also good news for England too, with the World Cup coming along next month and Kane seemingly in ideal form to light it up.
