‘Weakest part of the team’: Owen Hargreaves urges Arsenal to make one more ‘big’ signing this summer

Owen Hargreaves says Arsenal need a new central midfielder to take their team to the next level.

The Gunners currently sit top of the Premier League as the only side to have won all three of their matches so far.

On the Kelly and Wrighty Show, Hargreaves, who of course used to play in the centre of the park, said he thinks a top midfielder would make a real difference to Arsenal.

There have been links with Youri Tielemans throughout the summer, and Oleksandr Zinchenko can play there, but is currently covering for the injured Kieran Tierney at left-back.

Hargreaves says Arsenal should sign a new midfielder

He said: “Interestingly I think for Mikel and Edu, two central midfield players – I’d say that the weakest part of that team right now is probably there.

“I think that is probably where – they have really good pieces of the puzzle – I think you can invest big on a guy there to carry you to take the next step.

“I think they are really close but maybe one guy that can make a difference is that central midfield position.

Hargreaves is clearly not saying Arsenal’s midfield is poor, but that a new face of the right quality there would take the team up a notch.

It is hard to disagree with that, although perhaps Zinchenko could do that if he moves inside once Tierney is back in the fold.

Granit Xhaka is playing well right now and enjoying his football, but there is another level of calibre above him, if Arsenal can get a player of that quality without the lure of Champions League football.
