'We will see': 'Brilliant' Tottenham player suggests he's unhappy with Conte and wants to leave

Tottenham Hotspur winger Steven Bergwijn has dropped a hint suggesting he’s not happy at Spurs and is willing to leave.

The 24-year-old has failed to establish himself as a regular starter for Tottenham since his move in January 2020.

Bergwijn has 22 Premier League appearances to his name this season, but just four have been starts.

His total of 511 minutes is the fewest of any player still at the club, apart from Joe Rodon.

Bergwijn has made just one league start under Antonio Conte, who handed him eight minutes at the end of Sunday’s 3-1 win over Leicester.

Asked about his prospects by Dutch newspaper Algemeen Dagblad, Bergwijn said: “A place in the starting line-up? Here? I honestly don’t think so.

“The attack works well, but I don’t get to play much. A move to Ajax, or a return to the Netherlands would certainly be an option for me.

“The World Cup is coming. Mr. Van Gaal, the national coach, brought me into the team last time, even though I didn’t play much.

“Then you come back to the club and you barely play. It is a shame, of course. In the summer we really have to look for a solution. We will see what is best for both parties.”

“Should deserve more”

Conte himself suggested after the win over the Foxes that Bergwijn deserved more game time.

Conte spoke about his use of Bergwijn after Tottenham’s 3-1 win over Leicester on Sunday afternoon, during which the Dutchman featured for eight minutes.

“For me, it’s a bit difficult to keep him on the bench because Steven is maybe a player who should deserve more, but we have to try always a good balance.

“He is a striker, a fantastic striker but in this position there is Harry and then Sonny.”

Bergwijn has continued to make an impact for the Netherlands, with four goals from his last three games.

The Tottenham man scored a “fantastic” goal, in Van Gaal’s words, in the 1-1 draw with Germany last time out.

Earlier this season, Danny Murphy deemed Bergwijn “brilliant“.
