Rangers bowed out of the Europa League group stages with a 1-0 away defeat to Rapid Vienna – and some of their supporters on Twitter singled out defender James Tavernier for major criticism.

The Light Blues needed a win in Austria to qualify for the knockout rounds, but were unable to make the breakthrough against their opponents and were frustrated by the woodwork.

Rapid Vienna secured the win and their own qualification late in the contest with a goal through Dejan Ljubicic, as the visitors pushed for a decisive goal.

A selection of Rangers fans on social media vented their frustration towards Tavernier for his display and many don’t believe he is fit to be the club’s captain.

The 27-year-old is often under the spotlight of the critics despite being a mainstay at Ibrox and he was unable to make the difference on Thursday.

He is an attack-minded right-back that constantly pushes forward and his deliver to the penalty area was wayward against Rapid Vienna.

One fan even suggested they should offload the full-back for £2million in January and emotions were running high after a European exit.
