Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta was quizzed about his side terminating players’ contracts after Sead Kolaisnac was allowed to rip up his deal and walk away this week.

The Spaniard has made a lot of changes at the Emirates since his arrival. Arsenal are finally at a stage where they can call themselves an Arteta side, but the road to this point has not been easy.

Arsenal have had to terminate the contracts of Mesut Ozil, Shkodran Mustafi, Sokratis Papastathopoulos, Willian and most recently, Kolasinac, in order to get them out of the club.

As important as those decisions were, Arsenal just can’t keep doing this. Arteta was asked about it and the Gunners boss claimed that things will be ‘completely different’ going forward.

Mikel Arteta: Arsenal can’t keep terminating players’ contracts

The Spaniard said, as per The Evening Standard: “100 per cent. We don’t want to allow our players to terminate the contract in the last year when they are not playing. 100 per cent.

“What we are trying to build, and the squad we are trying to assemble, is going to be looking completely different, hopefully.

“The contract situation we had with some of the players were putting the club in a really difficult position, because the longer we leave them with months to finish their deals and with players that were not playing a lot of minutes, obviously the situation is not ideal.

“And then, it becomes in the interests of the player and club to finalise it in the best possible way, so everybody can terminate their obligation in the best possible way.”

Arsenal have to change their ways soon. Terminating players’ contracts every six months is not sustainable at all, but the Gunners had to do what they have done over the last year to cut down their wage bill.

Kolasinac, labelled as a ‘natural-born winner’ by Jack Wilshere, is the latest one to have his contract terminated, and Arsenal fans will be hoping that they won’t ever have to do it again to any other player.

The way Arsenal handle contracts have to improve in the coming years. Arteta has assured fans that things will look ‘completely different’ in the future, but only time will tell if Edu and co have learnt from their mistakes.
