Tottenham fans might be excited by the prospect of seeing Dane Scarlett emerge from the ranks, but according to Antonio Conte, the club needs to be careful with him.
Like any young player coming through the ranks, there has to be care taken in terms of how and when minutes are given. Sometimes, it can be better to introduce first-team football gradually, while some thrive off being thrown in at the deep end. Scarlett, as we know already, is highly thought of at Tottenham.

However, speaking in his press conference today, Conte has confirmed that while Scarlett is the best young player coming through at the moment, the club are having to be careful because of injuries.
“I don’t give gifts to my players. If you are a player and you are only 17-years-old, Dane’s working really hard and he is a really good prospect from the academy. He is for sure at this moment the best prospect from the academy. There are a couple of others who are improving,” Conte told Football.London.
“Dane has to continue to work very hard, we are trying to find the best solution in the training because he has a long history with injuries, he has great potential, he is only 17. I don’t give gifts to anybody, they have to deserve this opportunity.”
TBR’s View: Scarlett Key For Tottenham’s Future But Needs Helping
The comments from Conte here will be both reassuring and worrying. In terms of Scarlett geting chances under Conte, it is clear he is impressing the new Spurs boss.
However, the mention of his training load being managed already is a worry. Sure enough, it might just be the club being ultra careful when it comes to the young striker. But the fact a 17-year-old is already needing some special instruction in place could be a big problem.
Of course, everyone will hope it’s nothing and that Scarlett can fulfil his huge potential. If not, then it would be a true shame for both Tottenham and of course, Scarlett himself.
