‘We are looking’: Independiente confirm interest in Tottenham goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga

Argentine side Independiente are hoping to bring Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga back to his homeland this summer, according to the club’s manager.

The Avellaneda side are on the hunt for a new stopper after Martin Campana left the club following a legal dispute over pay.

The club’s sporting manager Jorge Burruchaga, who won the World Cup with Argentina in 1986, has been talking to the press in Argentina about the options available to replace the Uruguayan when the Tottenham keeper’s name came up.

“There are names that are always noted when one talks about possibilities, among them are (Orlando City goalkeeper) Pedro Gallese and Paulo Gazzaniga,” Burruchaga told Radio Colonia, as relayed by MARCA Argentina. “We are talking, as well as other players. Pusineri wants a goalkeeper, but what happens is that some cost more than others, like everything. We are looking and seeing what we can do to please the coach without neglecting the economic.”

Gazzaniga has been a trusted deputy for Hugo Lloris at Tottenham but had a kindred relationship with former Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino.

Jose Mourinho has brought in lapsed England international Joe Hart, who looks likely to take up the mantle of second-choice at Spurs.

It leaves Gazzaniga in a difficult position and he has already found himself linked with other English clubs and teams in Spain.

The 28-year-old, who has one cap for the Albiceleste, has actually never played in Argentina. He joined the youth team at Valencia in 2007 and went on to play for Gillingham, Southampton, and Rayo Vallecano on loan before joining Spurs in 2017.

So this would give him a chance to play regular football back in his homeland for the first time.

However, considering the previous keeper has left after a pay dispute with El Rojo, it seems unlikely that the historic club would be able to afford Gazzaniga’s services.

Whilst the Argentine might very well leave this summer, a move to the Estadio Libertadores de America seems unlikely.
