TalkSPORT pundit Jason Cundy has told the Sports Bar – as per the Daily Record – on Monday that interim Derby boss Wayne Rooney could be tempted to take over at Celtic – and form a rivalry with Steven Gerrard shining at Rangers.
Gerrard’s Rangers sit a whopping 21 points ahead of Celtic despite the Hoops winning the last successive nine Scottish Premiership titles. 10 in a row was expected, and now it is hanging by a thread – with the pressure surrounding Neil Lennon.
Rangers appointed Liverpool legend Gerrard despite the ex-Reds ace having only managed Liverpool’s Under-18 side. 120-time England international Rooney, 35, has only taken charge of Derby as an interim manager, winning three of his 10 in charge.
However, Rooney has got a struggling Derby side solid at the back – conceding just two goals in their last seven league games and keeping five clean sheets. Cundy thinks Rooney could be tempted with a move to Celtic, and joked about Frank Lampard.
“I’m guessing he’ll (Gerrard) want to finish whatever job he started, whether that’s back-to-back titles (or Champions League),” Cundy said. “It will be interesting to see who takes the Celtic job because I can’t see Lennon hanging on after this season.
“I just wonder who might be tempted up there, because what Steven Gerrard has done, Wayne Rooney for example, Frank Lampard after he’s won the title (audible laughing). Steven Gerrard has gone up there and made a name for himself.”
TBR’s view – What can Celtic do in terms of a manager hunt?
Celtic look unlikely to secure 10 in a row and if they fail to land 10, Lennon will almost certainly be sacked – as Cundy says. So, what kind of manager could they go for as a replacement? They have a number of options.
They could break the bank and bring a big-name manager to Parkhead. It worked with Brendan Rodgers, but ultimately, he only joined Celtic as he is a fan of the club. The Hoops are unlikely to get another Rodgers.
They can go for a former player. Paul Lambert is at Ipswich Town, for example, but it has hardly worked this season with Lennon. Or, they could go for a big name that is still cutting his teeth in management – like Rooney, and like Rangers did.
