Wayne Rooney thinks Liverpool star will be vital for England at Euro 2020

Wayne Rooney has told Sky Sports that Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson will be massively important for England during Euro 2020.

The maestro was an unused substitute during yesterday’s 1-0 win over Croatia at Wembley.

He has played very little football since suffering an injury for Liverpool back in February.

Rooney thought England were good yesterday but says he has some issues with the lack of experience in the team.

As a result, he has backed the Liverpool player to come in at some point and play a big part in the tournament.

He told Sky Sports: “There’s a lot of quality in the squad, my only worry is a lack of experience – it’s important Harry Maguire and Jordan Henderson get fit because they will be vital moving forward.”

Many people felt it was a risk to add Henderson to the squad in the first place.

The 30-year-old played 28 times for Liverpool last season but didn’t make an appearance from February up to the end of the season.

Maguire was another player who represented a risk, although he hasn’t been missing for as long as Henderson.

The Liverpool man has 59 caps for his country and is a well-respected member of the dressing room.

Liverpool fans will have different Henderson hope

Supporters will be hoping that Rooney is wrong and that Southgate continues to use Henderson as a peripheral figure.

The £140,000-a-week player has been out for so long that supporters won’t want him to break down and miss any of next season.

Henderson is an integral part of how Liverpool play and Jurgen Klopp will want him fit and firing next season.

His experience could well be vital for England but he looks unlikely to play on Friday either.

Both Declan Rice and Kalvin Phillips were solid in yesterday’s win and he may have to remain patient for a little while longer.

That will be music to the ears of Liverpool fans.
