Wayne Rooney shares what Sam Allardyce did at Everton which left him absolutely baffled

It seems a lifetime ago that Wayne Rooney was last playing for Everton and even longer back that he was bursting onto the scene as a teenager.

Rooney enjoyed two spells with his boyhood club. After coming through as a 15-year-old back in 2002, Rooney left to join Manchester United, where he went on to become the club’s record goalscorer.

However, Rooney did return to Everton back in 2017/18 actually enjoyed a good second stint with the Toffees, scoring ten goals that season.

Of course, Rooney has now moved into management and after losing his job at Birmingham City, seems to be on the hunt to get back in the game.

Rooney has been doing the media rounds a lot recently and this week, featured on Rio Ferdinand’s walk around Old Trafford for TNT Sports.

And during this stroll, Rooney revealed that while back at Everton, he was left both bemused by something Sam Allardyce did, while being equally amazed at what Pep Guardiola’s Man City did.

Wayne Rooney shares what Sam Allardyce did to confuse him against Manchester City

Speaking to Rio Ferdinand and Gary Pallister about coming up against top players and teams in their careers, Rooney got onto Pep’s City.

And he made a funny, if not startling admission about Everton’s tactics against City.

“I had that when I went back to Everton and we played Man City. Sam Allardyce was the manager and he played me and Morgan Schneiderlin centre-midfield. We’d been playing 4-3-3 but for some reason he went 4-4-2 and us two were in midfield and I remember as the game’s going on, I was confused. There were players everywhere. Honestly,” Rooney laughed.

Guardiola has done it to everyone

In fairness to ‘Big Sam’ here, he probably tried to do something a bit out of the ordinary and stifle Pep.

The Spaniard has done it to so many teams and managers over the years and most have fallen.

Rooney’s story here though is a funny one. The game Rooney references saw Everton lose 3-1 to City, so it must have been a tough day at the office.

Still, it’s fun to look back on for ‘Wazza’ now and he’s probably taken something from that into his own managerial career at times.
