Wayne Rooney makes surprise claim regarding Liverpool and Thiago Alcantara
Former Manchester United star Wayne Rooney has told Talksport that Liverpool signing Thiago Alcantara would be a better signing than Lionel Messi joining Manchester City.
In an astonishing interview, England’s all-time leading goalscorer also claimed he doesn’t expect any club to come between Liverpool and City in the race for next season’s title.
Rooney is currently at Derby County but was asked to give his take on the 2020/21 title race and he surprisingly backed Liverpool to prevail again, if they land Thiago.
He told Talksport: “I think it’s City or Liverpool.
“Man United have a lot of potential in the players they’ve got but I still think they are a year away.
“Chelsea with the new signings will possibly need a year to get everyone on the same songsheet.
“So I do think it’s between City and Liverpool. And if Liverpool sign Thiago from Bayern Munich, I think the title is done.
“That is a better signing than Messi going to Manchester City.”
Given that Rooney played for both Everton and Manchester United, these comments will perhaps surprise Liverpool supporters.
It does perhaps speak volumes of the quality of Thiago though, although saying it’d be a better signing than Messi going to City might be a stretch.
The Argentine is one of the world’s leading footballers, scoring 634 career goals from 731 club appearances.
Thiago is valued at £29 million by the recently crowned Champions League winners and it remains to be seen if Liverpool can strike a deal.
The Reds have only added left-back Kostas Tsimikas so far during the transfer window and it remains to be seen what will happen between now and October.
Rooney’s revelation will probably be taken with a pinch of salt by Liverpool supporters, given his previous ties to rival clubs.
If Liverpool do sign Thiago and Messi ends up at City, it will certainly make for one of the most enthralling title races of all time.
