‘Way ahead’: TalkSPORT pundit says Brentford player has totally outshone 28-year-old Tottenham star this season

TalkSPORT pundit Tony Cascarino says Brentford defender Ben Mee has totally outshone Tottenham Hotspur star Eric Dier this season.

Dier has been named in the 26-man England squad that will travel to Qatar for the World Cup.

The 28-year-old joins the likes of John Stones, Ben White, Conor Coady and Harry Maguire , who will all battle it out for a place in Gareth Soutgate’s starting line-up.

But Cascarino feels that Brentford’s Ben Mee has been better than most of the centre-backs who have been selected, including Dier.

Cascarino says Mee has outshone Dier

Mee made the switch to Brentford over the summer after leaving Burnley on a free transfer.

The 33-year-old put in a heroic performance yesterday as the Bees stunned Manchester City at the Etihad.

And Cascarino believes Southgate should have picked the Mee over the likes of Dier.

“If you’re looking at players in different positions, you would probably say who has been the best centre-halves this year? And you’d probably say Ben Mee has been one of them,” Cascarino told TalkSPORT.

“But he’s 33-years-old. Wouldn’t have got a look in [England squad] but if you said to me who’s been as good as most centre-halves, Ben Mee has been better than Eric Dier and certainly [Harry] Maguire.

“Would Gareth be doing too much change by saying pick someone who can come in. I’ve been to World Cups, I’ve experienced players who have come from nowhere.”

The former Chelsea striker went on to say that Mee has even outperformed Stones over the course of the season.

“It sounds ridiculous because people say ‘Oh, you can’t pick Ben Mee, he’s not played or he’s 33-years-old’,” he added.

“If you’re looking at form and he’s English, Ben Mee is way ahead of a number of centre-halves.

“If you go through Maguire, go through Dier, go through [Conor] Coady. There’s three just off the bat that play in the Premier League.

“Has John Stones been better than Ben Mee? I wouldn’t say yes. He’s done ok for City, he’s been in and out of the team at times.”

Dier earned his place back in the England squad in September after an impressive start to the new season under Antonio Conte.

The Spurs defender’s form has dipped over the past month as he’s made some costly errors, particularly the one against Liverpool last weekend.

But Dier’s form over the past year has proved to be enough to earn him a place on the plane to Qatar.
