Watford striker Troy Deeny comments on being linked with Tottenham

Watford forward Troy Deeney has responded when asked about being linked with a move to Tottenham last month.

Sky Sports claimed in September that the 32-year-old Watford captain was a transfer target for Jose Mourinho’s side.

The £65,000-a-week (Spotrac) striker was part of a Watford team that were relegated from the Premier League last season, despite his contribution of 10 goals in 27 games.

“I’m 32, a lot of clubs were looking for a different style of striker to back up,” Deeney told talkSPORT.

“There were a lot of talks, some things materialised & some didn’t. The ones that were getting closer you start thinking are you ready to go back to the Premier League just to be a bit-part player.

“You start weighing up the options of are you ready to call it a day. I think once you go into that mould of being a super sub you can’t really go back.”

Deeny was further asked if he ever had a conversation with Mourinho, he responded:

“I saw Jose at the Watford-Spurs game pre-season that’s all I’ll say.”

TBR’s View:

Deeney was fairly vague with his comments about Spurs, but it sounds like there was genuine interest in his signature in the recent window before he decided to stay at Vicarage Road.

The English forward would have been a gamble considering his fitness, but he’s someone proven at the top-flight and on his day is a real handful for Premier League defences.

Carlos Vinicius, 25, was the striker that Spurs turned to instead as they signed him on loan from Benfica and supporters will be excited to watch him in action for the first time.

The Brazilian is a younger option built in a similar style to Deeney and it will be intriguing to see how the physical attacker settles at the North London club.
