Watford 0-1 Stoke City: Three things that we learnt

Inconsistent Watford

One week you are beating the reigning Premier League champions, the next you are suffering a defeat on home soil to Stoke City.

Watford are anything but consistent and on Sunday they produced a lethargic, ineffective performance which was in complete contrast to their confident display the previous weekend against Leicester City.They were truly shackled by the visitors and struggled to develop any real momentum or attacking threat for the vast majority of the game, once Stoke had taken the lead Watford never looked likely to recover it.

What will have been more disappointing for The Hornet’s supporters is that a victory over Stoke could have seen them move into the top six places in the Premier League. Such an unenthusiastic performance with so much at stake will undoubtedly have left Walter Mazzarri scratching his head, if not pulling his hair out.

The Italian manager has made a relatively solid start to life in English football but he will need to make his Watford team much more consistent if they are to mount a genuine Europa League challenge.
