Was Clinton N’Jie Tottenham’s worst Premier League signing?

The Mirror are today claiming that Tottenham forward Clinton N’Jie is set to complete a move to Marseille, days after being omitted from the club’s pre-season tour squad, which hinted at an imminent exit, and only one year after signing from Lyon.

In what could be considered one of the club’s worst signings of the Premier League era, Spurs are set to take a £1 million loss on the Cameroonian, having signed him for £8 million last year, and are said to be set to loan him to Marseille with an option to buy, which could be triggered by various easily achieved clauses.

It ends a disappointing year for N’Jie, who played in 14 games for the North London club without scoring and only making one assist. Having started just three times, N’Jie failed to complete 90 minutes in a Spurs shirt, and missed four months of the season with a knee injury, although his absence was barely noted by many Tottenham fans.

Frequently playing out wide on the left, although he could also play centrally or on the right, N’Jie likes to play on the shoulder of the last man, attacking them with pace. In some ways, this hindered his chances at White Hart Lane, instead being used as an impact sub and being used against tired legs in the dying moments.

With Lyon said to have been interested in a comeback for N’Jie to the club where he came through the ranks, a deal to take him to the south coast of France is expected in the coming days after he completed a medical today. Arsenal were also said to be monitoring the 22-year-old, claim L’Equipe, and had enquired about a possible move, but the Gunners advances were immediately rejected by their rivals.

With Vincent Janssen already signed up, N’Jie’s departure could open up room for another striker to come in to White Hart Lane as they seek to add depth to their squad ready for a return to the Champions League, and with Harry Kane seemingly their only option up front at times last season.

The move puts an end to a tough year for N’Jie, and his Spurs career will be consigned to the history books and quickly forgotten. Fans and bosses alike will just be feeling relieved that after one failed year, they will only be making a £1 million loss on the striker.
