Arsenal lost out at Villarreal this evening but crucially got themselves an away goal thanks to Nicolas Pepe’s late penalty.
The Gunners opted to play with Pepe as a false nine but a miserable first-half threatened to leave that experiment as one for the bin going into the future for Mikel Arteta.
Things were made even harder for the Gunners in the second 45. Dani Ceballos, who has recently admitted he sees his future in Spain, saw red for a second yellow card before the hour mark.

But the introduction of Gabriel Martinelli after the game changed the dynamic and slowly but surely, Arsenal worked their way back into the game before Pepe tucked away the penalty on 79 minutes.
However, despite Pepe’s composure, it was Martinelli who won a lot of praise from Arsenal fans on Twitter. The young Brazilian brought great energy when he entered the fray and must surely be in contention to start the second leg.
And that was a thought echoed by some Gunners fans on social media, who praised Martinelli on Twitter for his efforts.
