Ex-Sunderland midfielder Lee Cattermole has edged closer to finding himself a new club. VVV Venlo have confirmed (via their official website) that Cattermole is on trial with the club.
Cattermole is training with VVV Venlo and he is pictured kitted out in the Dutch club’s training gear, sporting the number ’31’. The veteran midfielder will be hoping to earn a contract in Holland.
An official club statement reads: “Cattermole and VVV-Venlo have agreed with each other that in the upcoming period it will be considered whether club and player fit together.”

Cattermole left Sunderland after 10 years with the club. On the Sunderland official website, Cattermole wrote: “Sunderland is a special club and this decision has not been easy, but I believe it is the right time to find a new challenge.”
The 31-year-old might have moved to the Championship. But is looks like he will be pursuing his career abroad now. After spells with Middlesbrough, Wigan Athletic and Sunderland, VVV Venlo is an entirely different challenge.
This could be an exciting opportunity for Cattermole. At the age of 31, he knows that he will only have a few years left in his playing career. The chance to try out a different league, culture and lifestyle is appealing.
VVV Venlo are a high-aspiring club who play at a high level. After a 12th-place finish last season, they have enlisted the help of Cattermole to push them up the league table. And using his nous and tough-tackling approach, Cattermole could become a hit in the Netherlands.
