Vurnon Anita blows his chance, Leeds United should sell him this summer

The Dutchman came in for Gaetano Berardi but gave away a lazy penalty against Preston.

Leeds United lost yet again in the Championship last night, as Preston North End secured a 3-1 win against the West Yorkshire side.

It was another poor performance from Leeds, whose injury and suspension troubles in defence certainly didn’t help.

But it did give an opportunity to one summer signing to try and finally prove his worth. Vurnon Anita was called into the starting XI as a replacement for the suspended Gaetano Berardi.

The Dutchman has not been a regular at Leeds this season and this was his opportunity to stake a claim for the final few games of the season. However, the 29-year-old failed to take his chance. He did not put in a performance befitting a player desperate for first-team football. Instead, he struggled at Deepdale and gave away the penalty that started the home side’s comeback. His lazy challenge on Welsh winger Billy Bodin was rightly punished by the referee and it was the kind of thing Leeds fans have come to expect from the player.

His poor displays for Leeds this season have been something of a shock. He played an important role in helping Newcastle United to promotion from the Championship last season and did so playing in a number of different positions.

So to see him struggling so much for Leeds makes no sense.

Fans will now hope that youngster Tom Pearce gets a run of games at left-back ahead of Anita, whose first season at Elland Road has been largely forgettable.

In fact, it would be hard to find a Leeds fan who wants to see anita play for the club again after his lacklustre Preston display.

If Anita was to be sold in the summer, it certainly would not come as much of a surprise.
