Arsenal defender William Saliba is the talk of the town after his phenomenal debut performance against Crystal Palace last night, and it looks like he even impressed Virgil van Dijk, who followed him on Instagram right after the game.

The young Frenchman joined the Gunners back in 2019, but he hadn’t played a single competitive game for the club until yesterday. Mikel Arteta wasn’t convinced he was ready for the last two years, but the Arsenal boss give him an opportunity against the Eagles last night, and it paid off.

Saliba was the best player on the pitch. He was absolutely incredible, and his spectacular debut performance has earned him immense praise on social media.

The biggest praise of them all, however, could well be the fact that the best defender in the world has now noticed him.

If people didn’t know how good Saliba was before the game at Selhurst Park last night, they learned something new over the course of the 90 minutes.

The 21-year-old had never played in the Premier League before yesterday, but it looked like he’d been there for years. His performance was truly magnificent, and he deservedly won the Man of the Match award at the end of the game.

Right after the final whistle, a few eagle-eyed fans spotted that Liverpool star Van Dijk had just started following Saliba on Instagram.

The timing may well be a coincidence, but Arsenal fans will argue that the reason Van Dijk decided to give Saliba a follow is that he was impressed by his incredible display last night.

It’s never easy for someone as young as him to make his debut at a place like Crystal Palace. But, the talented French defender was almost flawless, and he impressed everyone who watched him last night, including his own manager.

“For William, to ask him to come here in his first Premier League game away from home against this physical team is a big task,” Arteta said after the game last night

“And the way the boy played and the way he resolved every situation, he deserves a lot of credit, and I will pat his back because he was superb.”
