Tottenham have signed striker Vincent Janssen from AZ Alkmaar for £17 million on a four-year deal. The 22-year-old joins with a fine reputation, having scored 27 league goals in the Dutch top flight last season and netting a penalty on his international debut against England in March.
The promising forward completed his medical on Monday and it has now been confirmed that he will join Harry Kane in the Spurs attack next season – forming a strike force that managed 52 league goals between them last term.
Janssen’s performances throughout the 2015/16 campaign saw him earn the 2016 Johan Cruyff Trophy, awarded to the Eredivisie’s young player of the year, previously won by former Tottenham star Rafael van der Vaart and current attacking midfielder Christian Eriksen.
There will be intrigue, particularly surrounding the system manager Mauricio Pochettino will opt to deploy following Janssen’s arrival. Does the investment in Janssen suggest that Spurs are planning to play two strikers up front, or will the Argentine head coach see the Dutchman is merely a back-up to Kane?
Unfortunately for expectant Tottenham fans, Pochettino’s favoured 4-2-3-1 formation could prevent him from featuring too often in his first season at the club. Harry Kane has the role of sole striker nailed down, bar a loss of form, which means Janssen could be restricted to late cameos and cup run outs.
Here is how Twitter reacted to the 22-year-old’s arrival at White Hart Lane:
