Crystal Palace are reportedly interested in signing Brentford attacker Ollie Watkins and have tabled an £11million offer for the exciting young winger – but surely Aston Villa have to to join the race for the Brentford star.
The Daily Mail claim Palace are keen to start bringing in new players and the report claims they are now ready to start spending the money that was received for young right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka.
Watkins, 23, is high on Palace’s radar and the Eagles have made an offer. Neal Maupay, Watkins’ teammate, is also interesting Roy Hodgson, as is Fedor Chalov, Victor Camarasa and Omar Elabdellaoui.
Former Exeter City winger Watkins was in sensational form last season for Brentford. Indeed, the winger had a hand in 21 goals during his 45 league and cup appearances – scoring 12 and laying on nine assists for the Bees.
It has seen Watkins take his overall tally to 23 goals and 14 assists in two seasons, and for a young player in a difficult league such as the Championship, those stats are seriously impressive for a winger.
It has caught the attention of Roy Hodgson, who is keen to bring Watkins to Selhurst Park as cover for the likes of Wilfried Zaha and Andros Townsend – and maybe even Zaha’s replacement if the Ivorian leaves.
But at such a bargain price for an already established Championship star, surely Aston Villa have got to rival Palace – especially when considering manager Dean Smith brought Watkins to Griffin Park in the summer of 2017.
Indeed, Smith bought Watkins for a bargain fee of £1.8million from Exeter – and the winger has since blossomed under the guidance of Smith, working under the Villa boss for just over 12 months.
Villa have brought in Trezeguet this summer, as well as Jota and Anwar El Ghazi. But Jota may be preferred in the 10 role, and adding Watkins as an option out wide – or up front – would surely appeal to Smith and Villa at £11million.
