Video: What Trippier did after Sunday win, ahead of potential Newcastle move

Kieran Trippier is reportedly on the verge of joining Newcastle United from Atletico Madrid. The defender played in Atleti’s 2-0 win over Rayo Vallecano – before videos have emerged of Trippier extensively applauding the crowd

Trippier, 31, has enjoyed a brilliant spell at Atletico Madrid. Joining the club in the summer of 2019 from Tottenham, he clocked up 86 appearances in all competitions – laying on 11 assists, and winning the 2020-21 La Liga title.

But the Euro 2020 finalist has made it clear that he wants to return to the Premier League. Now, the ex-Manchester City and Burnley star could be about to do that – by moving to cash-rich, relegation-threatened Newcastle.

Numerous reports state that Trippier is expected to join Newcastle this week, with Sky Sports claiming that the Toon’s new owners hope Trippier is the first of four arrivals this month. Below, is what he did after full-time on Sunday.

Playing the entire 90 minutes in Atleti’s easy win over Vallecano – thanks to a brace from Angel Correa – Trippier was seen applauding the crowd by himself, after his teammates had made their way to the changing rooms.

Trippier applause: Has defender rubber-stamped Newcastle move?

The applause was certainly just a bit more than the bog-standard clap a player gives the fans. Much like Harry Kane’s farewell to the Tottenham fans before a summer-long saga over a move to Manchester City.

Surely, then, it suggests that Trippier will be leaving and reports seem to suggest a deal is as good as pencilled in. If Newcastle can get him over the line, it is a serious coup – a brilliant start to the January window.
