What Southgate said to England squad before they set off for Qatar

Southgate said in the clip which can be watched below: “I just wanted to say firstly, congratulations to everybody. It’s a big moment.

“We go to a World Cup and we now decide how long and how far we go. We’ve experienced success and we’ve experienced adversity.

“So everything that we’ve been through together as a group stands us together in stead for the next five or six weeks. Today is about enjoying yourselves and getting yourselves excited about going to a World Cup, recognising what it means.

“Getting back together, getting your England badge on and enjoying yourself. That’s all we want to do. Get excited about going to Qatar for a unique experience.”

England made the semi-finals of the last World Cup and the final of Euro 2020, so it is clear what the next step for thsi team is.

Southgate has faced some very unfair criticism since that penalty shoot-out loss to Italy and will be relishing the chance to take England deep into yet another tournament.

The Three Lions should win their group and they seem to be on a collision course with France in the quarter-finals, although at Southgate’s previous two tournaments, the draws have not panned out as expected at all.
