Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta immediately called Granit Xhaka over when Emerson Royal was sent off for Tottenham on Saturday.

The Gunners were already 2-1 up when the right wing-back got a straight red card for a challenge on Gabriel Martinelli.

Arsenal’s official YouTube channel have posted footage of Arteta’s reaction to key moments in the game and showed what he did straight after the red card.

He wanted to get some instructions on to Xhaka before the match restarted and within five minutes, the midfielder had made it 3-1.

Whatever Arteta said clearly did the trick because Xhaka swiftly put the game beyond Arsenal’s north London rivals.

Top managers earn their money by their rapid reactions to things which come up in matches which cannot be predicted.

Arteta had to think of the best way to make the most of the man advantage and it seems he did exactly that on Saturday afternoon.

The win kept Arsenal on top of the Premier League, where they sit a point ahead of Manchester City, who of course enjoyed their own derby day win on Sunday.

Xhaka has been in great form this season and is freer to push forward when Thomas Partey is in the side, with both midfielders scoring on Saturday.

Xhaka does not wear the armband anymore but has always been a leader for Arsenal under Arteta, and that was underlined again here.
