Liverpool managed to see off Manchester City on Super Sunday as a Mo Salah goal ensured the Reds beat off their bitter rivals.
Much of the pre-match talk had been about how many goals Erling Haaland might have scored. However, he was kept quiet enough despite having a few good chances, with Virgil van Dijk producing a performance much more like what we’ve been used to seeing in recent seasons.

Van Dijk was calm at the back and along with goalkeeper Alisson, seemed to embrace the challenge of keeping City out. And at full-time, it was clear that Van Dijk was grateful for his goalkeeper, as the cameras picked up on the Dutchman going straight over to the Brazilian stopper.
Shared by Football Daily, the Sky cameras showed Van Dijk making a beeline for Allison at full-time, before embracing his goalkeeper.
Clearly, any success Liverpool hope to have this season will rest on how well the likes of Van Dijk and Alisson play.
The duo have been integral to Liverpool seeing big rewards in the last few seasons and today was a sign that both might be on their way back to their best.
TBR’s View: Van Dijk Superb For Liverpool
Micah Richards spoke about the big players putting in big performances in the huge games and Van Dijk did that today.
Sure, Haaland had a few chances and could have scored but in the main, Van Dijk kept him quieter than most and proved yet again just how good he is.
Liverpool need Virgil van Dijk to produce these sorts of performance every week. If he does, then they’ll soon start climbing that Premier League table and any worries from the opening ten games can be banished.
