Arsenal star Nicolas Pepe scored an impressive solo goal for Ivory Coast against Tottenham Hotspur skipper Hugo Lloris’ France last night.
Côte d’Ivoire faced the world champions at the Stade Velodrome in a friendly yesterday and they were definitely the underdogs going into the game.
However, the West Africans played really well and were arguably unlucky to lose.
Pepe’s opener in the 19th minute was cancelled out by Olivier Giroud’s goal just three minutes later. Ivory Coast held on and just when it looked like the game would end 1-1, Aurelien Tchouameni scored in the 93rd minute to win the game for the hosts.

At the Velodrome last night, Pepe picked up the ball on the right side of the pitch like he usually does and drove towards the box.
He was up against Bayern Munich star Lucas Hernandez and instead of cutting in and having a pop at goal with his favourite left foot, Pepe decided to go the other way.
The Ivorian, after a brilliant step-over, skipped beyond Hernandez and fired a powerful shot past Lloris to finish off a fantastic solo goal.
Instead of his usual ‘hand over his eyes’ celebration, Pepe decided to show off his moves and danced in front of 65,000 people in Marseille last night.
What next for Pepe?
Arsenal splashed a club-record £72 million (BBC) to sign Pepe from Lille in the summer of 2019. A lot was expected of the Ivorian, but it’s safe to say, he hasn’t quite lived up to his price tag.
In 107 appearances for the Gunners, Pepe has scored 27 goals and has provided 20 assists in all competitions.
That’s not a great return at all and with Bukayo Saka playing as well as he is on Arsenal’s right flank, there’s no way Pepe will start ahead of him anytime soon.
It will be interesting to see what happens with Pepe this summer. Branded as an ‘incredible player’ by Mohamed Elneny, the 26-year-old will enter the final two years of his contract and if a decent offer arrives on the table, it won’t be a surprise to see Edu and Mikel Arteta move him on.
