Ollie Watkins was called up into the England squad as a late replacement after Tammy Abraham pulled out of the original party.

The Aston Villa striker came on for Harry Kane in the 89th minute of the Three Lions’ 2-1 win over Switzerland on Saturday evening.

That spot as Kane’s back-up appears to be wide open, with injuries and loss of form impacting the potential options at various times.

Watkins is the man in that role at the moment, and will hope to get an opportunity to shine when England host the Ivory Coast at Wembley tonight.

Kane is the undisputed first choice striker, as the captain and the man who is chasing down Wayne Rooney’s Three Lions scoring record at some pace.

But a reliable plan B is needed for Southgate, and Watkins needs to impress in training when he gets his opportunity in front of the manager.

It seems he did that yesterday, based on a video that England’s official YouTube channel posted yesterday.

Right at the start of the video, Watkins wraps a stunning strike into the top corner of the net, drawing applause from his teammates.

Later on in the video, Gareth Southgate is also seen applauding the Villa frontman on what he has managed to produce.

Watkins has six caps to his name since making his debut against San Marino a year ago, scoring in a 5-0 home win.

He will be hopeful of hanging onto his spot in the squad, which went to Dominic Calvert-Lewin for Euro 2020.

The Everton striker has suffered a season afflicted by injury and poor form, although Abraham has clearly jumped to second in the pecking order based on the original squad selection.
