Tottenham Hotspur found out the hard way this evening just how impressive this young Ajax side are. After defeating Real Madrid and Juventus the Dutch side were fearless against Spurs, who were completely outplayed in the first-half.

Despite a second-half revival, Ajax claimed a 1-0 win courtesy of Donny van de Beek’s goal.

Tottenham’s players looked leggy compared to the Dutch side but it was also a game which confirmed what many Spurs fans have been saying for some time regarding one player. Victor Wanyama.

The Kenyan was found completely out of his depth against the sensational Ajax midfield duo of Frenkie De Jong and Van de Beek.

In the first-half especially, Ajax ran rings around the 27-year-old, who was made to look like a pub player by the Dutch side.

Tottenham signed Wanyama in 2016 from Southampton for a deal reported by The Guardian to be in the region of £11 million.

He starred initially but it appears the level Tottenham want to play at has surpassed the midfielder. Knee injuries have recently plagued him, and perhaps that plays a role.

But he simply looked well below the level necessary to be playing in a Champions League semi-final tonight. Tottenham will need to consider his place in the first-team going forward after this poor display.
