Victor Wanyama was brilliant for Tottenham when he first joined back in 2016, but Tuesday night proved he won’t ever get back to that level and manager Mauricio Pochettino should forget about him in his immediate plans.
Spurs were given a major reality check by losing on penalties to League Two opponents Colchester United in the Carabao Cup, which has only intensified the talk about the club’s 11-year trophy drought.
The North London club were sloppy away to Colchester recording a goalless draw after 90 minutes and they then lost the lottery in the shootout.
Wanyama was given his first 90 minutes of the season in the cup fixture and even against lower league opposition he looked off the pace.
He was an all-action defensive midfielder during his debut campaign with Spurs, but injuries have impacted his career and he now looks miles away from what he once was.
The 28-year-old was extremely sloppy in possession on Tuesday and stood out as rusty for his side.

His only previous appearance this season came at the weekend in the 2-1 defeat to Leicester City, where he had an afternoon to forget.
Wanyama came off the bench at the King Power Stadium in the Premier League, with his team holding a one-goal advantage at the time in the second-half.
But the Kenyan gave away the ball in the build up to Leicester’s equaliser and could have closed down better for James Maddison’s eventual winner.
It seems like he’s blown his opportunities already in the space of two games and there are far better options than him in the current squad.
Tanguy Ndombele, Harry Winks, Moussa Sissoko and Eric Dier are all Spurs players that should be in Pochettino’s thinking ahead of Wanyama moving forward.
