Victor Wanyama is likely to struggle breaking back into Tottenham side

Tottenham midfielder Victor Wanyama is back in contention after his latest injury setback and faces an uphill struggle to break back into the starting XI.

Spurs signed the powerhouse for £11million (BBC) back in 2016 from Southampton, as he linked up with his former boss Mauricio Pochettino.

He was a huge success during his first campaign with the North London club and an ever-present in the side, with his presence and strength making him a rock in the centre of the park.

But the last 18 months has been disrupted by a spate of injury problems and he has definitely slipped down the pecking order.

Harry Winks and Moussa Sissoko have become the preferred combination for Spurs in recent times, while Eric Dier is another option in the central midfield area.

Wanyama is likely to be rusty after a spell out and he’s had a few substitute appearances since returning from injury.

The Kenya international is going to have to reignite his best form if he is to disrupt the new-look Winks-Sissoko combination that is working so effectively.

Wanyama can be a midfield destroyer that breaks up play and protects the back four, but Spurs fans haven’t seen that player consistently for a long period of time and he could easily fall into the trap of a squad option.
