Leeds United have recently been linked with a potential move for Middlesbrough defender Daniel Ayala.
Middlesbrough are reportedly prepared to cash in on Ayala in January as his current contract expires in the summer and they cannot afford to offer him the same terms.
Both reports also mention Victor Orta. The Leeds United director of football will know Ayala from his time at Middlesbrough and it is being suggested that might be a reason behind Leeds United’s interest.
The Leeds supremo did not, however, bring Ayala to Riverside. The former Liverpool youngster was already at Boro when Orta arrived on the job in December 2015.
But in 2016, Orta did negotiate a new deal with Ayala, the one which will expire in the summer. That certainly gives the Leeds United transfer chief an intricate knowledge of Ayala’s current situation.
Orta has gone back to his former club on two previous occasions. He snapped up Adam Forshaw in January 2018 and Patrick Bamford, who had previously signed for Boro, last summer.
So there is definitely a precedent and it would be no surprise if Leeds use Orta as their secret weapon to win any battle to lure Ayala away from Teesside in January.
