Arsenal duo Gabriel Magalhaes and Willian have been named in Alan Shearer’s Premier League Team of the Week for their impressive displays in their season opener at the weekend.
The two summer signings were both named in the starting XI by Mikel Arteta as Arsenal got their campaign under way at newly-promoted Fulham.
Although Gabriel looked a little nervous at the start, he grew into the game and was defensively sound, with a debut goal the cherry on top.
Willian, meanwhile, more than justified his selection over Nicolas Pepe with an impressive display, assisting for two of Arsenal’s goals en route to a 3-0 victory at Craven Cottage.
The 32-year-old also struck the woodwork with a first-half free kick and troubled the opposition defence all game long with his movement and clever passing.
“Another player who enjoyed a very impressive debut as he scored a powerful header while contributing to a clean sheet at the other end,” Shearer wrote of Gabriel on the Premier League website.
On Willian, the former Newcastle and England striker said: “Arsenal’s new recruit quickly picked up where he left off with Chelsea last season, playing a part in all three goals and very nearly scoring himself as he hit the post from a free-kick.”
As far as debuts go, Gabriel passed with flying colours and then some, and with Willian also impressing on his competitive bow, it looks as though Arteta has hit the jackpot in the transfer market so far – and that’s before getting onto Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s new deal.
Admittedly, Arsenal are going to get tougher matchdays than Fulham, but given how the Gunners are now a stronger outfit than when they won the FA Cup and they got their season off to a perfect start, it really bodes well for the future at the Emirates Stadium.
