‘Very good’… Ange Postecoglou so impressed with 23-year-old Tottenham player vs Newcastle United

Ange Postecoglou has singled out Dejan Kulusevski for praise after his performance against Newcastle United today.

Spurs thrashed Newcastle United 4-1 in North London thanks to goals from Destiny Udogie, Richarlison and Son Heung-Min.

It’s fair to say that Tottenham were in desperate need of a positive result after failing to pick up a win in their last five Premier League games.

Postecoglou made a couple of changes to his side on Sunday after the defeat to West Ham during the week. Pape Matar Sarr came back into the midfield, while Richarlison moved up front.

Dejan Kulusevski operated in a central role in the absence of James Maddison and the Swede put in another encouraging display.

And Postecoglou believes the 23-year-old has proven to be a ‘really effective’ option for his side this term.

Postecoglou impressed with Kulusevski display

Speaking to Sky Sports after today’s game, Postecoglou was asked for his thoughts on Kulusevski’s displays in the middle of the park.

“Yeah, very good,” the Spurs boss said. “He’s had to play a variety of roles, again because of what we’ve gone through in terms of injuries.

“Everywhere he’s played he’s always been effective and I thought he was really effective today.”

Kulusevski has quickly established himself as a key man under Postecoglou and has started in every Premier League game this season.

His ability to play centrally has benefitted Spurs massively of late as well with Maddison sidelined until the new year.

It felt a bit harsh to drop Giovani Lo Celso to the bench today after some encouraging displays from the Argentine recently.

Yet, Spurs looked more balanced in the middle of the park due to the return of Sarr and Kulusevski’s ball-carrying ability caused Newcastle serious issues all afternoon.

It remains to be seen whether or not Kulusevski could become a more permanent feature in midfield for Spurs. But he certainly seems to be enjoying his new role in Postecoglou’s side.
