'Very exciting': David James says that Liverpool have a brilliant 19-year-old coming through their ranks
Carvalho has got off to a really promising start to his Liverpool career after making the switch from Fulham over the summer.
The 19-year-old has already racked up 16 first-team appearances under Jurgen Klopp and has bagged two goals in the process.
One of the goals was a memorable last-minute winner against Newcastle United back in August in front of a sold out Anfield crowd.
Off the back of a promising start to his Anfield career, former Liverpool shot stopper David James is really excited about Carvalho’s potential.
David James on Carvalho
Speaking to GGRecon, James was asked if Carvalho has the potential to represent England one day.
It sounds slightly bizarre considering Carvalho plays for Portugal’s U21 side at this moment in time but he represented England 29 times at youth level.
But after he pulled out of Portugal’s U21 squad, speculation has surfaced that he could switch back to England. And James thinks he’s good enough to play for Gareth Southgate’s side one day.
He said: “Yes. He’s a very exciting young player. Using Aaron Ramsdale as an example, I know that Matt Turner has been playing for them in the Europa League, but he’s a player that’s involved in European competition and he’s expected to compete in it for the next few seasons the way that Arsenal are going.
“He, like Fábio Carvalho, is a player that’s going to benefit from playing against the best teams in world football on a more regular basis.
“If Gareth Southgate has players available to him who are playing at that high a level, then you’d argue that they can only improve the value of the squad.”
James is right to be excited about Carvalho’s potential at Liverpool, especially after some really promising displays.
Both Carvalho and Harvey Elliott have impressed in Klopp’s side this season and the future of Liverpool’s midfield looks to be bright.
The youngster will be hoping to get more opportunities in the first-team when Liverpool return to action after the World Cup.
